Our Specialist Rooms

Hydrotherapy Pool:

Merstone School has the benefit of a dedicated hydrotherapy pool, providing pupils with a safe, supportive and accessible environment in which to develop their physical, sensory and emotional wellbeing. The pool is used to support a range of individual needs and enables pupils to participate in therapeutic activities that may be difficult to access on land. Hydrotherapy can help pupils to develop strength, mobility, balance and coordination, while also promoting relaxation, confidence and independence. For many pupils, time in the pool is an enjoyable and motivating part of the school day, providing opportunities to experience movement, make choices and engage with others in a calm and nurturing environment. The hydrotherapy pool is therefore an important resource that complements pupils' educational, therapeutic and wider wellbeing needs.

Dark Room:

Merstone School has a dedicated dark room designed to support pupils with a range of sensory needs. The calm, controlled environment provides opportunities for pupils to explore and respond to different lights, colours, sounds and sensory experiences at their own pace. The space can be used to promote relaxation and emotional regulation, reduce sensory overload and support pupils who benefit from a quieter, low-stimulation environment. It also provides opportunities for focused sensory exploration and therapeutic activities, helping pupils to develop their awareness, communication, attention and engagement. The dark room is a valued resource that supports pupils' individual sensory profiles and contributes to their overall wellbeing, confidence and readiness to learn.

Immersive Room:

Merstone School has a dedicated immersive room, providing a high-technology environment where pupils can interact with technology in a calm, engaging and highly adaptable space. Projectors display images, colours, videos and interactive content across the walls, with the experience controlled through an iPad to create an immersive and responsive learning environment. The room can be used in a variety of ways to meet individual pupils' needs, including relaxation and sensory regulation, developing communication and engagement, exploring stories and experiences, and supporting subject-specific learning across the curriculum. The immersive environment provides pupils with opportunities to explore new experiences in a safe and motivating way, helping to promote curiosity, creativity, participation and enjoyment while supporting their individual learning and sensory needs.

All rooms are shared between Merstone School pupils and Forest Oak pupils whom are located in a shared building. Swimming is not an entitlement for all pupils.
